01 · Modular Construction
A condemned offsite scheme gets a complete reset
Lovell has been appointed to rebuild a Southend housing development abandoned after the collapse of modular manufacturer Ilke Homes. Guinness Partnership concluded that the partially completed 131-home scheme could not be recovered after inspections found regulatory and fire-safety failures. Thirty-two partially assembled homes have been stripped back to their concrete slabs.

Multiplex turns an old structure into a material bank
Multiplex has signed the main works contract for Derwent London's redevelopment at 50 Baker Street after a year under a preconstruction services agreement. The new nine-storey scheme will include offices, shops, restaurants and residential space, with main construction expected to start in 2027.

The reused concrete will get the attention, but the year of early contractor involvement may be the more useful lesson. Circularity becomes credible when testing, design, warranties and logistics are resolved before the programme hardens. The industry has reusable material. Ontario turns tariff disruption into a trades pipeline
Ontario and the Canadian federal government are funding retraining for more than 500 workers across northern Ontario. The programme targets communities affected by tariff and trade disruption in steel, forestry and manufacturing, with courses covering welding, millwrighting, heavy equipment operation, electrical work and housing construction.

Fast retraining can widen the entry point into construction, but a short course does not remove the need for mentoring, supervision and progression once workers reach site. Granite takes on a 1931 California spillway
Granite Construction has won a contract from PG&E to replace the spillway at the Tiger Creek Regulator Dam in California. The work includes a new spillway crest and chute, a temporary cofferdam, rock anchoring, mass concrete and the decommissioning of the existing slab-and-buttress spillway built in 1931.

Passenger numbers on Spain's high-speed rail network fell 21% in the first quarter of 2026, the first decline since the pandemic. The January Adamuz crash, temporary line closures and winter storms all affected demand, while prices have also started rising on some routes.
