The
retrofit quality gap becomes impossible to ignore
The UK government
is moving toward an approved installer register after a major home
insulation failure. Up to 23,000 properties may need repairs, and the
NAO found that 98% of inspected external wall installations had defects.
This is not just a retrofit problem. It is procurement, competence,
supervision, and quality assurance wearing a green policy jacket.

labour gap is still very real. The industry needs an average of 41,200
extra workers per year through 2030, with expected employment reaching
2.68m. Replacement demand and skills gaps do not pause just because the
market feels softer.

Electric
fleets start with the depot
Guelph has broken
ground on a new transit and fleet operations hub designed to store,
charge, and maintain electric buses and city vehicles. PCL is leading
construction, with Stantec as prime consultant and Strasman Architects
on design. The scheme has been scaled down for affordability, but still
keeps modular expansion in the plan.

Pearson
starts the long game
Toronto Pearson
has started the first phase of a long-term airport overhaul, with major
work planned across airside improvements, baggage systems, terminal
upgrades, and airport infrastructure. The delivery model matters: the
programme is using progressive design-build, which brings contractors in
earlier and reduces the fantasy of perfect tender-stage certainty. For a
live airport, that is not a nice-to-have. It is the job.

The
bridge opens, then the old one comes down
The $284m Chester
Bridge project is nearing completion, replacing the aging Mississippi
River crossing between Illinois and Missouri. The new three-tower
cable-stayed bridge doubles the width to 44 ft and is expected to open
to traffic by July 2026. Crews have dealt with wind, river flooding,
alignment tie-ins, and final cable tensioning while keeping the old
bridge in service.
