The Lower Thames Crossing starts its tunnel clock
National Highways has ordered the giant tunnel boring machine that will excavate the Lower Thames Crossing. Herrenknecht will manufacture it for the Bouygues Travaux Publics and Murphy joint venture, with tunnelling expected to begin in 2028.

The lead time is the real story. The machine must be designed, manufactured, tested, transported in sections, and assembled at Tilbury before it moves through a metre of ground. The operator of the Czech D4 highway has started testing AI-based tools while using Thinkproject to govern information across construction, handover, maintenance, and operations. It is the Czech Republic's first highway delivered through a public-private partnership.

Barratt Redrow says it has recovered £38 million from subcontractors connected to defects on older developments. The recovery offsets only part of the pressure, with annual building-safety remediation spending expected to double to £300 million.
The wider signal is that historic workmanship, product substitutions, and design decisions can continue travelling through the supply chain years after handover.
